We’re excited to announce that our third annual Butterfly Release is coming up again this year!
This heartfelt event will take place on Saturday, June 15th, from 1-3 PM at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Community Centre, located at 14 Anderson Lane in the picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. We can’t wait to welcome you for this special occasion.
Our event will begin with a touching “stroll through memory lane.” Anyone has the opportunity to display an image or collage of their loved one. These beautiful memories will be displayed on tables lining the auditorium, creating a space filled with love and remembrance for everyone to see. It’s a wonderful way to honour the people who have meant so much to us.
Inside the Community Centre, we’ll be offering coffee, tea, and light snacks. You are welcome to connect with others who are also remembering loved ones. This part of the event is a great time to share stories, offer support, and be part of a community that understands the journey of grief and healing.
At 1 PM, we will gather everyone together and head outside for the butterfly release. Here, you will pick up your reserved butterfly and prepare for the poignant ceremony that follows. We will have a brief service during which we will read the names of the loved ones who passed away in 2023. This is a powerful moment, as each name is spoken aloud, honouring their memory and acknowledging their impact on our lives.
Following the reading of the names, we will collectively release the “Painted Lady Butterflies,” which are indigenous to our area. Watching these beautiful butterflies take flight is a serene and uplifting experience, symbolizing transformation and the enduring spirit of our loved ones.
While this event primarily honours those who passed away in 2023, we understand that grief doesn’t follow a calendar. We welcome you to release a butterfly for a loved one who passed away in previous years. Although their names won’t be included on the memorial scroll for this year, the act of releasing a butterfly in their honour is a meaningful way to remember them.
If you’d like to participate in this event, please let us know! Even if you can’t attend in person, we can still release a butterfly on your behalf. You can purchase a butterfly ahead of time, and we’ll ensure your loved one’s name is read during the ceremony.
The cost of each butterfly is $25. To reserve your butterfly, you can e-transfer to our email, mail a check, or visit our offices to pay with cash by May 31st, 2024. Don’t forget to complete a simple reservation form to secure your butterfly for the event.

This is a wonderful way to remember my husband after 14 years. Think of Bruce every day. His children miss his presence Brad & Suzanne and their spouses along with his Grandchildren Michael, Hannah, Aedan, and Avery—his fur buddy Patches.
